Gregory Colling, AIA Greg's career was nurtured in a Victorian suburb of Boston and was inspired by a visit to the "Palladio in America" exhibition in 1976. He commenced his architectural studies at The New York Institute of Technology and transferred to the Boston Architectural Center, now the Boston Architectural College. While at the BAC, he apprenticed at Crissman and Solomon Architects, beginning as an office boy and leaving as a project architect after receiving his bachelor's degree in 1987. Greg moved to New York City in 1989 and joined the newly established architecture firm of Ferguson Murray and Shamamian, where he worked as a project architect and later as an associate on several high-profile residential projects in Manhattan, Westchester County and Connecticut. It was during this time that he met Eric Daum, his future business partner, another architect in the firm, when they collaborated on several projects. In 1995, Greg left New York to attend the University of Pennsylvania where he received his Masters of Architecture in 1997 and completed his education through travel study in London, Paris and Switzerland. After graduate school, Greg returned to New York and established a practice in Brooklyn Heights later joining a midtown firm designing high-end residences in Manhattan and upstate New York. Greg returned to Boston in 1998, taught design at the Boston Architectural Center and Wentworth Institute of Technology and worked as project architect on the New Bedford Whaling Museum, and classroom and office buildings for the Harvard Business School. In 2002, he joined his former colleague and current Merrimack Design Associates partner, Eric Daum, at The Classic Group, a design build firm where he was senior designer for several large estate projects in the Boston area. In 2007, Greg founded Merrimack Design Associates. The firm has expanded to four people and has successfully designed and completed residential projects in the Boston area and in New England. In addition to lecturing on historic American architecture for the Newburyport Preservation Trust, Greg currently serves on the Local historic District Study Committee in Newburyport, Massachusetts where he is currently restoring his 1730 home which he shares with his wife, Claire, and black lab, Diego.
